Former No. 1 overall pick center Greg Oden and the Miami Heat have agreed to terms on a two-year deal, according to multiple reports. Oden?s deal is worth $1 million for next season and includes a player option for $1.1 million for 2014-15.
SI.com?s Chris Mannix confirmed the reports.
Oden had been showing off his skills for teams the past few weeks. Teams which were looking at him included the Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks, according to an ESPN report.
Oden last played an NBA game Dec. 5, 2009, and underwent three microfracture surgeries as recently as February 2012. He was selected with the first overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers back in 2007.
During his brief, injury-riddled career, Oden has averaged 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game with the Trail Blazers.

Obama, Clinton meeting for lunch at White House
WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's the most talked about lunch in the nation's capital.
President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are dining privately at the White House Monday. While it's not the first time the pair have seen each other since Clinton left the administration earlier this year, each of their get-togethers are closely analyzed.
That's because Clinton is considered a leading contender to replace Obama, though she hasn't said whether she'll launch another presidential campaign.
The president is also being watched for signs of who he will support in the race to replace him. Vice President Joe Biden is also believed to be considering a run for the White House, potentially leaving Obama caught between two of his closest advisers.

COOKIN' ON THE ROOF

I remember very vividly the first time I heard Roman Holliday. ?I was at Camel Records in Huntington Beach looking through their new releases and I happened upon the imported (from the UK) 12" single for "Don't Try To Stop It". ?Up to this point, the band had never even entered my radar. ?But I was intrigued by the unique retro look of the band and I believe that I immediately thought of both Madness and JoBoxers. While I didn't know what to expect musically, I took a chance and bought the single. ?And even though I had limited funds, taking chances on bands is what I always did in those days... and still do to a certain extent. When I got home after a few hours of record shopping, the first thing I threw on was "Don't Try To Stop It". ?I was an immediate fan. ?Their sound was energetic, fun, melodic, punchy and had a Swing vibe to it, which was certainly not the norm in 1983. (In fact, it would be another decade before a Swing revival would be in full...er... swing!) A month or two later, the song was in constant rotation at KROQ along with their other two singles "Stand By" and "Motormania", all three of which had been combined to create their self-titled debut American EP.?
? ? ?So, later that year, the band released their debut album, Cookin' On The Roof, and it was - and remains - one of the truly great Pop records of it's day. ?While I don't know what went on behind the scenes, record-company wise, I have never felt that the band's image and music was contrived or manufactured during this period. ?These guys were great musicians, knew how to write a snappy, catchy tune and they were fully aware of Pop music history. ?Their love of what they were doing bleeds through on Cookin' On The Roof. Their musical angle at this point focused on Swing Jazz complete with a horn section. ?Frontman Steve Lambert was a Pop vocalist who was more than able to hold his own in this musical setting, but it was also a bridge between the then-modern Pop scene and the Swing orientation of the band. Peter Collins' production is very busy and at times a little too confining for the seven piece band, but he does add his usual flair to the proceedings and the album is tight and to the point. ?There is not one song that overstays it's welcome. Apart from the aforementioned singles, the original album also features eight additional gems including "I.O.U", "Serious Situation", "No Ball Games" and so many more. ?A spirited and sprightly treat from beginning to end.?
? ? ?In a sense, its really hard to convey the 'feeling' that I have for this album. ?Words can express my thoughts, but an album like this really meant something then and now. ?It may not have offered solutions to life's mysteries or cured the ills of the world, but it sure made it far more tolerable... and blissful! ?The innocence of the band's image and sound offered excitement and hope. Theirs was a happy sound without any sign of pretentiousness. Roman Holliday seemed to live and breathe their music. They reached back into the past and brought some great Swing and Jazz elements to the music while also keeping it Pop-oriented and accessible to a new generation of listeners who hadn't been exposed to much Swing before. ?They were unique and fun, which was what really made them stand out in a sea of or bands content with following trends and making music that was dictated by whoever was in the Top Ten at the time. ?The only other bands that were carving out their own niches at the time were Dexys Midnight Runners, JoBoxers and few others. ?
? ? ?Sadly, it didn't last long. A year later, the band had dumped the horn section and re-fashioned themselves as Duran Duran-lite. ?They lost their uniqueness, their innocence, their joy and their spirit. The album they released in '84, Fire Me Up, was not bad. ?But it was an album that could have been made by anyone else at the time. ?Cookin' On The Roof, on the other hand, was something entirely different and entirely wonderful.
? ? ?This remastered reissue is much better than the Japanese CD that was released and deleted more than a decade ago, so stop searching for that and buy this one. ?Why? ?Because this annotated reissue also contains six bonus tracks including two non-album b-sides ("Round And Round" and "Beat My Time") plus extended and acapella versions of "Don't Try To Stop It" and "Motor Mania". ?If that isn't enough to make you run out to your local shop or order online, then perhaps you need to rethink your lot in life and find your 'happy place'. ?Perhaps you should spend more time 'cookin' on the roof'!? ?

Three days into it, one of the most anticipated battles of training camp isn't a battle at all.
Not only has John Greco established himself as the starting left guard, but after the first day in shoulder pads Saturday it looks as though no one is going to knock off Shawn Lauvao at right guard. The 2010 third-round draft pick did not start well as a rookie under Eric Mangini. But when Pat Shurmur took over in 2011, he plugged Lauvao in as the starter and Lauvao has been there ever since.
"I thought I did well for the most part," Lauvao said, referring to 2012. "I've started the past two years. I'm always critical of myself. I'll do anything I can to get better."
The coaches like Lauvao because he gets a good push on run plays and holds his man on pass blocking. He might be more bull than finesse, but he gets the job done.
During organized team activities and minicamp, Lauvao, Greco and Jason Pinkston were in a three-man rotation. Pinkston, the starting left guard in 2011 and the first six games of 2012 until a blood clot in his lung sidelined him for the last 10 games, has been with the second team since training camp started. He did not help his cause Saturday when he was yanked from the play for a false start.
"The coaches have really emphasized wanting us to be an attacking offense," Lauvao said. "Whether that's me pulling, whether it's running more or passing more is up to the coaches."
Lauvao, 6-foot-3, 315 pounds, is in the final year of his contract.
Taylor returns
Nose tackle Phil Taylor returned to practice on a limited basis Saturday after missing the first two days with a calf injury. He participated in individual drills but not in team drills. He could be in team drills on Sunday if he has no setbacks.
Tight end Kellen Davis (knee) also returned to practice on a limited basis. Continued...
Offensive tackle Oniel Cousins is expected to miss "a couple weeks" with a sprained ankle, Coach Rob Chudzinski said.
Fullback Brock Bolen was on the sideline working out a calf strain.
Quarterbacks rebound
One day after resembling tailgaters throwing the football around in a parking lot, Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell looked sharp again on Saturday, particularly Weeden. He gunned a deep pass to Josh Gordon and hit the second-year receiver in stride.
"I thought the offense as a whole had a lot better day," Chudzinski said. "That's one of the things you'd like to see happen on a day-to-day basis, so it's not always one side of the ball winning. You'd like to see it where it's offense one day, defense the next day, and when there's a back-and-forth competition. At the end of the day, you need a balanced team. You have to be able to win games in this league different ways."
Brian Hoyer, the third quarterback, struggled again.
Screen machine
The Browns devoted a large portion of practice Saturday to screen passes. It seemed Dion Lewis, acquired from the Eagles in a trade for linebacker Emmanuel Acho, got an abundance of work.
"He's a guy that we haven't seen a lot," Chudzinski said. "Running backs really tend to show more when the pads come on. You see their running skills and the blocking schemes develop a little bit better. Like you saw today, with pads on it's a lot different. We will continue to look at him as well as all of those guys. We will put them in situations so they can show what they can do."
Lewis, a fifth-round draft choice by the Eagles in 2011, rushed for 102 yards as a rookie and 69 yards last season. He has three career receptions. Continued...
Wallace on the move
Here is an early scouting report on the Miami Dolphins, whom the Browns play in the season opener:
The Dolphins plan to move speedy receiver Mike Wallace around more than the Steelers did when Wallace played in Pittsburgh. The strategy means whichever defensive back has slot coverage, probably Buster Skrine, will be on Wallace.
"I will be inside a little more," Wallace told reporters covering the Dolphins. "(Offensive coordinator Mike Sherman) wants to switch us around a lot more where people can't key on you. I had primary things to do in Pittsburgh. Here I'm switching a little bit more and doing a little bit more of everything."
Wallace has been running slants and out patterns early in training camp. He caught 64 passes for 836 yards (13.1 average) and eight touchdowns last season.
Kirkpatrick healed for Bengals
It has taken a year to see a positive result, but Dre Kirkpatrick, the Bengals first-round draft pick in 2012, is practicing pain free. The cornerback from Alabama was matched on star receiver A.J. Green and stayed with him stride for stride.
The news wasn't as good for Green ? although it wasn't as bad as it might have been. Green's left knee was injured as he overextended trying to make a sideline catch. An MRI revealed no structural damage ? only a bruise. Green is expected to miss several days of practice.
Not the same Steelers
The Steelers are going through a transition in training camp. Aside from Wallace, linebacker James Harrison, cornerback Keenan Lewis, nose tackle Casey Hampton, running back Rashard Mendenhall, tackle Max Starks and lineman Willie Colon are gone from the team that finished 8-8 last season. Some aging veterans are back trying to play as they did when they were young. Safety Troy Polamalu is 32. He played in only seven games last year because of a calf injury. The Steelers are in trouble if he doesn't rebound because they have no experienced safeties behind him. Interestingly, the Steelers took a safety, Shamarko Thomas of Syracuse, in the fourth round with the pick acquired from the Browns in April.
Tight end Heath Miller, 30, is coming off three knee surgeries. He isn't participating in training camp and might not be ready in September.

Does Amazon Confirmation E Mail Indicate A Delay for The PS 4
Like many consumers the launch of the upcoming game consoles from Microsoft and Sony are a hotly contested, yet highly anticipated event.? For this article I am not going to be taking a stance on the merits of one system over the other but simply pointing out some interesting maneuverings in the presell battles.? The other day I was contacted by some people who told me that they had a cryptic message from Amazon regarding their day one pre-order of PlayStation 4.? I did some checking with other people improve ordered and even looked at a pre-order we had set aside as a gift. Upon checking the status of the order, I was given the following message ?.Thank you for shopping with us. We?d like to let you know that Amazon has received your order, and is preparing it for shipment. Your estimated delivery date is: Monday, January 6, 2014 ? Wednesday, January 8, 2014.
While I appreciated the attention to detail this does raise some rather interesting questions .? Since all the people I checked with were day one pre-orders either the supply of new PlayStation 4 consoles is going to be very limited or perhaps the January date signifies a later release date then fans had originally intended as most of them had been expecting the new consoles somewhere around November of 2014.? Now I understand this could simply be investment and should I release date in November arrived that certainly would not be out of the question for the consuls to ship early.? However as somebody who regularly purchases through Amazon, they generally do not commit to a ship date without a pretty good understanding of one product will be available.? The standard line has always been we have received your order and able ship once the product is ready and that she will be given an e-mail at a time to verify this.
I went to the local GameStop to do some browsing as I often do and talk with the staff .? The employee told me that Microsoft has only allocated a very small amount of Xbox One units to retailers for launch.? He said this tactic allows Microsoft to count that they have sold out of all of their pre-orders as well as create demand for the unit through orders that will be filled in the weeks and months ahead.
He said that Sony on the other hand has set no limits as to their pre-orders.? As a result, he believes that several people who pre-ordered expecting a day one release, will actually receive their unit for several months or weeks down the road when supplies start to catch up with demand.? He said there will likely be some very upset people who thought they would be getting a day one shipment as a pre-ordered at the first available date from their retailer but will find out that they may not see unit for a few months after street date.
Interestingly enough, GameStop yesterday indicated that they had received a limited allocation of Xbox One units that were available for pre-order and that consumers wishing to get their hands on the new console needed to take advantage of this offer before they were gone.
In the end what really will matter is the quality of the unit?s , the games , and the features of each console, but for people who purchased pre-orders on day one with the anticipation of having units for the upcoming holiday season, this could lead to a lot of frustration for both consumers and retailers alike if people with day one pre-orders are forced to wait weeks or months for delivery.
Software experts attack cars, to release code as hackers meet

Car hacking is not a new field, but its secrets have long been closely guarded. That is about to change, thanks to two well-known computer software hackers who got bored finding bugs in software from Microsoft and Apple.
Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek say they will publish detailed blueprints of techniques for attacking critical systems in the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape in a 100-page white paper, following several months of research they conducted with a grant from the U.S. government.
The two "white hats" ? hackers who try to uncover software vulnerabilities before criminals can exploit them ? will also release the software they built for hacking the cars at the Def Con hacking convention in Las Vegas this week.
They said they devised ways to force a Toyota Prius to brake suddenly at 80 miles an hour, jerk its steering wheel, or accelerate the engine. They also say they can disable the brakes of a Ford Escape traveling at very slow speeds, so that the car keeps moving no matter how hard the driver presses the pedal.
"Imagine what would happen if you were near a crowd," said Valasek, director of security intelligence at consulting firm IOActive, known for finding bugs in Microsoft's Windows software.
But it is not as scary as it may sound at first blush.
They were sitting inside the cars using laptops connected directly to the vehicles' computer networks when they did their work. So they will not be providing information on how to hack remotely into a car network, which is what would typically be needed to launch a real-world attack.
The two say they hope the data they publish will encourage other white-hat hackers to uncover more security flaws in autos so they can be fixed.
"I trust the eyes of 100 security researchers more than the eyes that are in Ford and Toyota," said Miller, a Twitter security engineer known for his research on hacking Apple's App Store.
Toyota spokesman John Hanson said the company was reviewing the work. He said the carmaker had invested heavily in electronic security, but that bugs remained ? as they do in cars of other manufacturers.
"It's entirely possible to do," Hanson said, referring to the newly exposed hacks. "Absolutely we take it seriously."
Ford spokesman Craig Daitch said the company takes seriously the electronic security of its vehicles. He said the fact that Miller's and Valasek's hacking methods required them to be inside the vehicle they were trying to manipulate mitigated the risk.
"This particular attack was not performed remotely over the air, but as a highly aggressive direct physical manipulation of one vehicle over an elongated period of time, which would not be a risk to customers and any mass level," Daitch said.
'Time to shore up defenses'
Miller and Valasek said they did not research remote attacks because that had already been done.
A group of academics described ways to infect cars using Bluetooth systems and wireless networks in 2011. But unlike Miller and Valasek, the academics have kept the details of their work a closely guarded secret, refusing even to identify the make of the car they hacked.
Their work got the attention of the U.S. government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun an auto cybersecurity research program.
"While increased use of electronic controls and connectivity is enhancing transportation safety and efficiency, it brings a new challenge of safeguarding against potential vulnerabilities," the agency said in a statement. It said it knew of no consumer incident where a vehicle was hacked.
Still, some experts believe malicious hackers may already have the ability to launch attacks.
"It's time to shore up the defenses," said Tiffany Strauchs Rad, a researcher with Kaspersky Lab, who previously worked for an auto security research center.
A group of European computer scientists had been scheduled to present research on hacking the locks of luxury vehicles, including Porsches, Audis, Bentleys and Lamborghinis, at a conference in Washington in mid-August.
But Volkswagen obtained a restraining order from a British high court prohibiting discussion of the research by Flavio D. Garcia of the University of Birmingham, and Roel Verdult and Baris Ege of Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
A spokeswoman for the three scientists said they would pull out of the prestigious Usenix conference because of the restraining order. Both universities said they would hold off on publishing the paper, pending the resolution of litigation.
Volkswagen declined to comment.

The problems with divorce proceedings in Israel
The Los Angeles Times spoke about how it's so difficult for a woman to get a proper divorce in Israel, more so than for a man:
JERUSALEM ? After four years of marriage, Tamar Tessler filed for divorce, taking her infant daughter and embarking on what she hoped would be a new chapter of her life.From what I can tell here, this may have happened long before the Haredis became a serious problem. Regardless, this is an embarrassment for Orthodox Judaism, because if they vehemently refuse to modify the customs so that it can all be done with either spouse in absentia, then all they're doing is pegging themselves as stingy old bags. This has pretty much led to a culture of corruption where estranged spouses - especially husbands - refuse to grant a divorce to the wife out of spite.Today that daughter is 36 years old ? and Tessler is still awaiting the divorce.
Her husband long ago moved to America, said the 61-year-old retired nurse. But under Israeli law, she remains trapped in a defunct marriage that her husband won't allow to end. She can't legally remarry, was obligated as his spouse to repay some of his debts, and lost out on tax breaks for single mothers even though she raised their daughter alone.
Tessler is one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Israeli women caught in legal and social limbo because of a law that leaves matters of divorce for all Jewish citizens in the hands of a government-funded religious court.
The court, consisting of a panel of rabbis, bases its decisions on the customs of Orthodox Judaism. The rulings apply to all Jewish Israelis, whether they are Orthodox, Conservative or Reform, observant or secular. And their authority even extends to those who married abroad in civil ceremonies that were registered in Israel. Divorce for non-Jews is handled by their own religious institutions.
Under the court's interpretation of Jewish religious law, a husband's, or wife's, consent is necessary to end a marriage. As has been the case for centuries, a Jewish divorce is not final in Israel until men deliver handwritten divorce decrees into the cupped hands of the women, who then must hold the paper aloft. A rabbi tears the document, called a get, into pieces, which are then filed for record-keeping.
The rabbis can order a reluctant spouse, usually a man, to grant the divorce, and Israel's parliament is considering a bill to expand the court's power to apply pressure. But if a spouse refuses to undertake the religious rite, the court says, it doesn't have the power to dissolve the marriage.Like I've thought before, the issue of marriage isn't the problem, but rather, the issue of divorce that should be handled in civil courts.Rabbis have upheld the need for consent even in cases where a man has abused his wife, disappeared, lied about his sexuality or molested their children.
Exploiting what amounts to veto power over a divorce, some men demand financial payoffs from the court. Others pressure wives to pay them, give up their homes, forgo child support or waive custody rights.
Women's rights advocates are pushing Israel's coalition government, the first in decades that does not include ultra-Orthodox parties, to pass reforms. A report in April by the Israeli religious rights group Hiddush ranked Israel alongside Iran and Saudi Arabia in terms of marriage freedom.
"When it comes to matters of divorce, Israel is a theocracy," said Batya Kahana-Dror, executive director of Mavoi Satum, a legal group devoted to helping women obtain divorces.
In Israel, there is no civil marriage, so Jews must wed in accordance with the rabbinate's Orthodox customs. Many opt for civil ceremonies abroad, which over the years have become legally recognized in Israel. But while the law has bent to permit different ways into marriage, there is still only one way out: the religious court.
To address the problem of get refusal, the parliament in 1995 gave the rabbinical court expanded legal power to crack down on stubborn spouses by suspending driver's licenses, seizing bank accounts, preventing travel abroad and even imprisoning those who don't comply with an order to grant a divorce. One man has spent more than 10 years in jail.These days, I figure that with a culture of corruption among the Haredis, that explains why the lack of convincing enforcement.Women's groups say the 1995 law hasn't made much difference because the court uses sanctions in less than 2% of cases. They recently pushed through a bill to include female members for the first time on the panel that appoints the court's rabbis, in an effort to make the court more sensitive to women's needs.
The court rabbis insist that they are trying to help.It doesn't matter, they still have to modify, and not act as though it's sinful to run it through without both sides agreeing. So they'd better not say they're trying to help."We are extremely sensitive to the situation in which a woman may be left without a divorce and go to great lengths to resolve it," said Eli Maimon, a rabbi assigned to assisting the wives.
The court hires former members of the country's spy agency to find missing husbands, posts a "most wanted" list on its website, and works with rabbis and women's groups around the world to shame men by banning them from the local synagogue or protesting at their homes.
In April, a recalcitrant husband who had moved to the United States and returned to Israel on vacation was shocked to find himself being arrested, while sipping wine with his girlfriend in a Jerusalem bar, for violating the court's divorce order. After a night in jail, he signed the papers.
"By the morning they are begging to give the divorce," Maimon said, adding that 10 men are currently in prison. "In ancient times, you could beat a divorce out of a man, but we can't do that today under Israeli law."
Women also have the ability to block divorces. But activists say there is a loophole for men ? getting 100 rabbis to say it's OK for him to remarry ? and the burden of divorce denial falls much heavier on women.So here's somebody disillusioned with the system, and who could blame her with the people in charge, especially today. It's particularly shocking that there's a double-standard here, that the "sins" of the mother fall upon the child, but not upon the father.Activists estimate that about 1 in 5 women who seek a divorce ? or about 3,400 women a year ? is denied by her husband. Many cases are settled, but others drag on for years or decades in a process women say is skewed against them.
The biggest concern is a religious law that says if a woman has children with another man before divorce is granted, those children and their descendants will be deemed illegitimate and not allowed to marry in Israel under current law. The law does not apply to men.
Tessler, who first filed for divorce in 1977, says she's given up on starting a new family. She had a 15-year relationship with another man, but he left after she refused to have children because they'd be "branded a bastard."
But she still wants a divorce to prevent her husband from collecting her pension after she dies, which she said would be the final injustice. Her husband could not be reached for comment.
Her daughter has been in a long-term relationship and wants children. But there are no plans for a wedding and Tessler isn't surprised.
"She doesn't want to hear the word 'marriage,'" said Tessler, who lives with her two dogs north of Tel Aviv. "You shouldn't need a piece of paper to be happy. I had that piece of paper and it gave me nothing but trouble my entire life."

Newly retired Apolo Ohno to work in TV at Olympics

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Apolo Anton Ohno is hanging up his skates to join NBC's coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
The most decorated U.S. Winter Olympian in history will work as an analyst on speedskating, in addition to doing features and studio commentary during the network's coverage in February.
Ohno says he may also contribute to NBC's coverage of Alpine skiing and snowboarding in Sochi, Russia.
"Hopefully I can give people a good show," he said Saturday at the Television Critics Association meeting.
Ohno recently retired without fanfare, although he hadn't competed since the 2010 Vancouver Games. He won eight medals in three Olympics.
"I miss it every day," he said.
At the same time, Ohno said, "I don't want to get in that skinsuit."
He first worked for NBC at last year's Summer Olympics in London, giving him a view of the action from the seats.
"That was my most difficult moment because you feel like you can do it one more time," said Ohno, who first thought after his last race in Vancouver that he might be done competing.
Ohno said being an ex-athlete will help him relate to the people he covers in ways that his media colleagues cannot.
"I've lived it. I've been there day in and day out," he said. "I can share that and gain that trust with other athletes."
Ohno said he won't have a problem asking tough questions.
"You have to," he said. "At the end of the day I have a job."
The 31-year-old skater is living full time in Los Angeles to take advantage of entertainment opportunities that have materialized since he broke out as a star at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
"Olympic athletes have to find a job right after they're done competing," he said.
In June, he started hosting a new version of "Minute to Win It" on the Game Show Network. He earlier raised his pop culture profile by winning a season of "Dancing With the Stars."
"You'd like people to remember you for these great times on the ice," he said. "In reality, you want them to forget because you're doing something new and better. This is the new me."

Pomona College ranked No. 2 on the Forbes list of top colleges. Stanford, also in California, was at the top of the list.
Forbes' magazine's list of America's Top Colleges for 2013 is notable for what's not in the top slot: an Ivy League school.
The distinction of being number one this year goes to Stanford University (alma mater of Yahoo chief Marissa Mayer). The number-two school is Pomona College, a small liberal arts college in Southern California.
A slightly more diverse pool of "top" schools doesn?t make it easier for middle-class kids to afford an elite education, though, and although the rankings take future earnings into account, they don?t illuminate where surgeons, judges and other highly paid professionals went to school.

The Ivies, East Coast schools that have reigned supreme for the last two centuries, still pick up four of the top 10 spots ? Princeton, Yale and Columbia are numbers three through five, respectively, and Harvard is number eight ? and all are in the top 20. But schools on the West Coast have proven they are competitive. Stanford and Pomona climbed from numbers 23 and 20, respectively, in five years, and the top-ranked public school on the list is the University of California, Berkeley.
This may reflect a diversification in the assessment of what constitutes a ?top? school, and perhaps an infatuation with Silicon Valley and the technology sector.
So-called STEM jobs get a lot of attention, but they comprise only about 6 percent of the job market, said Anthony Carnevale, director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
?They're very important jobs ? in part because of who's pushing for them ? the high tech industry,? Carnevale said. ?There's another 94 percent of the workers who need jobs.?
Although 3.75 percent of a school?s rank is determined by the number of students who get Ph.Ds, ?The real metric is earnings,? Carnevale said. ?What they should be focusing on is professional degrees ? any kind of doctorate that has an occupational attachment.?
But paying for degrees in hopes they lead to high-income jobs has become more difficult. Two-thirds of students now graduate with an average $26,600 in debt, according to The Institute for College Access and Success.
Each of the top 10 schools costs more than $50,000 a year with the exception of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Students there pay with a commitment: five years of military service after graduation.
Forbes does factor student debt in its ranking formula, which accounts for 17.5 percent of a ranking?s weight. TICAS president Lauren Asher finds it lacking, though.
"It doesn't appear to include the share of students who graduate with debt or their average debt when they graduate, which are better indicators of what your debt expectations should be," Asher said. More detailed information about each school's individual debt profile is included in its summary listing, but it's not part of the weighted ranking that separates top schools from the rest of the pack.
When Forbes started ranking schools in 2008, debt wasn?t included in the criteria at all.
?At the time, I think the debt issue and the financial issues were a little less prominent in the discussion,? said Richard Vedder, director of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity. ?It?s become a bigger issue.?
The list remains dominated by more-expensive private institutions, with only one state school (Berkeley) in the top 25. Forbes does compile a ?best value? list, but it doesn?t take a 4.0 GPA to figure out which one college administrators would rather be on; Forbes even dubs its top 100 list ?the only schools that matter.?
These lists feed into a kind of self-reinforcing feedback loop that Carnevale said makes it increasingly difficult for states to compete. ?It's sort of a shame because building those elite public [schools] is really a remarkable achievement,? he said.

Moody's gives blessing to California's additional school aid
The extra state aid flowing to California's school districts this year after a half decade of cutbacks is a "credit positive," Moody's Investor Service said Friday, while cautioning school officials against overspending the new money.
"The liquidity of all school districts will improve as the budget reduces payment deferrals and thereby improves the timeliness of aid payments," the credit rating house said in its weekly bulletin. "However, the credit positive budget measures are not a panacea because some school districts will continue to be challenged by expense pressures and growing pension costs."
It notes that under the school finance plan championed by Gov. Jerry Brown and adopted by the Legislature, all districts will receive more money, but those with large numbers of poor, English-learner students will receive markedly more.
"The added funding, which is an important credit factor, could enhance these districts' credit profiles," Moody's says. "Nonetheless, effective management and budgeting of the funding enhancements will shape their longer term credit profile."

Chinese man's headaches caused by 6-inch parasite in his brain
A 60-year-old Chinese man Wang Ming, from Chengdu, had suffered "headaches, convulsions and even fainting" for more than six months before he went to see a doctor. An X-ray of his head revealed a six-inch long worm-like parasite lodged in his brain.
Surgeons performed a three-hour operation to remove the parasite at the First People's Hospital in Shuangliu earlier this month. They found that the worm was still alive when they put it in water after removing it from Ming's brain. According to the Shangaiist, prior to the surgery, doctors had expected to find a tumor or evidence of infection that was causing the symptoms. The hospital's director of neurosurgery, Wang Biao, said the parasite was unlike anything he had ever seen. He said Ming probably got the infection from eating undercooked food. The Shangaiist reports he said: "Aquatic organisms typically contain many parasites; If people don't cook frog or eel properly, the animal's parasites may enter the human body."Source: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/355296
