AFC Playoff Matchups 2012 - Business Insider

The AFC playoffs are ready to go.

Here are the seeds:

  1. Denver Broncos?(bye)
  2. New England Patriots?(bye)
  3. Houston Texans
  4. Baltimore Ravens
  5. Indianapolis Colts
  6. Cincinnati Bengals

So the Texans will play the Bengals this week in Houston, and the Ravens will play the Colts in Baltimore.

Not the juiciest match-ups in the world. But the Broncos and Patriots getting the 1-2 seeds means that we could potentially see a Brady vs. Manning AFC Championship Game down the road, which is plenty juicy. Also, as commenter "Avocado" points out, Peyton Manning could play the Colts in round two if they beat Baltimore and Houston beats Cincy.

Another intriguing note: the Denver Broncos got the #1 seed with a 13-3 record. But they're only 2-3 against playoff teams, so they're a big mystery.

Google Bait & Switch on Nexus 4 with USB OTG

Just about the only reason I bought this phone was because of an application that would allow me to upload my Garmin sports watch data using the USB port.? Plus, with no SD card the USB port would allow for additional storage.

?

Now we find that not only is USB OTG not available, but that it is never going to be avilable.?? Google has gone back and modified the manuals to reflect this.

?

Now that Google has pulled the bait and switch on us, is there any recourse?? I've had the phone about three weeks and just signed a new two year T-Mobile contract.

?

Are enough people affected to warrant a class action suit?

Five Ways To Become Financially Fit in 2013 - Faith and Finance

Post image for Five Ways To Become Financially Fit in 2013

It may be hard to believe, but 2013 is almost here. And with a new year approaching, most of us take this time to reflect on what we?ve done this past year, as well as think about what we?d like to accomplish next year.

For many of us, part of what we?d like to do next year is?improve our financial?lives. Does that describe you?

Do you want to be in a better position in December 2013 than you are in December 2012? If so, here are five ways to get your finances in better shape.

Get Out of Debt

Getting dragged down by?debt can lead to heartache, pain, stress, and relational tension. In order to relieve yourself of these burdens, and before you can build wealth and increase your net worth, you?ve got to get out of the financial bondage of debt.

Dave Ramsey popularized an extremely effective way to free yourself from debt, and that method is called the Debt Snowball. To learn more about the Snowball, check out this post on how to accelerate your Snowball.

Max Out Your 401k

If you work for a company, you probably have access to a 401k plan as part of your benefits package. For most employees, this is the best, most effective way to build long-term wealth.

As Tim mentioned in this post, you can contribute up to $17,500 to your 401k?in 2013. The good thing about this amount is that it doesn?t include any employer match.

So any money that your company matches can be thought of as a bonus. It?s free money that?ll help you improve your finances even faster.

Max Out Your Roth IRA

If you?re really committed to becoming financially fit, you may already have planned out your?budget?to max out your 401k,?and yet still have money left over to invest. If so, another great wealth-building tool you can take advantage of is the Roth IRA.

In the same?post mentioned above, Tim noted that you can contribute up to $5,500 to your IRA in 2013.

Do you know how much wealth can you expect to build by maxing out both your 401k and Roth IRA? Let?s say you invest $23,000 every year, for the next?twenty years.

Using the historical stock market average return of 8 percent, and ignoring taxes for the moment, this is how much wealth you?ll have accumulated at the end of those twenty years: $1,052,525. This demonstrates the incredible power of disciplined investing.

Earn More

While you should definitely seek to cut unnecessary expenses, it?s impossible to spend less than nothing. Cutting costs will only take you so far on your journey to become financially fit. But on the other hand, there?s no upper?limit on how much you can earn.

Tim has great ideas on how you?can earn more money?on the side ? so there?s no need to quit your day job. You?ll definitely find something you can do to bring in extra money. Once you start bringing in extra income, you can use it to pay off your debts faster, or invest it to build even more wealth.

Give More

It?s nice to be able to get your finances in order and build wealth. But I think it?s even better to be in a position to?bless others?with that wealth you accumulate.

Kiva is a site that allows you to do exactly that. By making a small loan, you can play a part in fighting poverty by helping entrepreneurs create better opportunities for themselves.

Best of all, with an over 98 percent repayment rate, you?ll most likely get all your money back. Then you can make another loan to help yet another entrepreneur. It?s truly a gift that keeps on giving.

What are you going to do to become more financially fit in 2013?

Find room for God in fast-paced world, pope says on Christmas Eve

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, leading the world's Roman Catholics into Christmas, on Monday urged people to find room for God in their fast-paced lives filled with the latest technological gadgets.

The 85-year-old pope, marking the eighth Christmas season of his pontificate, celebrated a solemn Christmas Eve mass in St Peter's Basilica, during which he appealed for a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict and an end to the civil war in Syria.

At the mass for some 10,000 people in the basilica and broadcast to millions of others on television, the pope wove his homily around the theme of God's place in today's modern world.

"Do we have time and space for him? Do we not actually turn away God himself? We begin to do so when we have no time for him," said the pope, wearing gold and white vestments.

"The faster we can move, the more efficient our time-saving appliances become, the less time we have. And God? The question of God never seems urgent. Our time is already completely full," he said.

The leader of the world's some 1.2 billion Roman Catholics said societies had reached the point where many people's thinking processes did not leave any room even for the existence of God.

"Even if he seems to knock at the door of our thinking, he has to be explained away. If thinking is to be taken seriously, it must be structured in such a way that the 'God hypothesis' becomes superfluous," he said.

"There is no room for him. Not even in our feelings and desires is there any room for him. We want ourselves. We want what we can seize hold of, we want happiness that is within our reach, we want our plans and purposes to succeed. We are so 'full' of ourselves that there is no room left for God."

PEACE CANDLE

Bells inside and outside the basilica chimed when the pope said "Glory to God in the Highest," the words the gospels say the angels sang at the moment of Jesus' birth.

Earlier on Monday the pope appeared at the window of his apartments in the apostolic palace and lit a peace candle, as a larger-than-life nativity scene was unveiled in St Peter's Square below.

Reflecting on the gospel account of Jesus born in a stable because there was no room for Mary and Joseph in the inn, he said when people find no room for God in their lives, they will soon find no room for others.

"Let us ask the Lord that we may become vigilant for his presence, that we may hear how softly yet insistently he knocks at the door of our being and willing.

"Let us ask that we may make room for him within ourselves, that we may recognise him also in those through whom he speaks to us: children, the suffering, the abandoned, those who are excluded and the poor of this world," he said.

He asked for prayers for the people who "live and suffer" in the Holy Land today.

The pope called for peace among Israelis and Palestinians and for the people of Syria, Lebanon and Iraq and prayed that "Christians in those lands where our faith was born may be able to continue living there, that Christians and Muslims may build up their countries side-by-side in God's peace."

The Vatican is concerned about the exodus from the Middle East of Christians, many of whom leave because they fear for their safety. Christians now comprise five percent of the population of the region, down from 20 percent a century ago.

According to some estimates, the current population of 12 million Christians in the Middle East could halve by 2020 if security and birth rates continue to decline.

At noon (1100 GMT/6 AM ET) the pope will deliver his twice-yearly "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) blessing and message from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica.

Easy Techniques For Network Marketing And Mentoring | Jim ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Posted by Administrator on Dec 24, 2012 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

The more informed you are about network marketing, the more likely you are to succeed. Use this information to educate yourself and be more successful.

If you have decided to embark upon a MLM campaign, it is important to consider the overall compensation package that is available to you and whom ever you have partnered or teamed up with. It is key to know the compensation you should expect before you enter into any agreement so that you do not waste your time with an organization that has little to offer.

Keep meetings under an hour. If you talk for more than an hour, you are trying to cram in too much information and will end up overwhelming your prospect.

TIP! When deciding what type of network marketing to do, pick a company with products that are of interest to you. Your passion for the products will rub off on your customers, and in turn, your customers will be more interested in the products as well.

Consider outsourcing your MLM. This will keep you from having to hire additional people to keep those advertising efforts top-notch. You can use the time you gain by outsourcing for more important business matters and still get a good return on your advertising.

Continually bring new prospects to your website. This could possibly be the hardest part of successful multilevel marketing; however, it?s absolutely essential. Once you get people to your web page, they will have more of an idea of what it is you are selling, and it will help them to make up their mind.

TIP! Network marketing should be seen as a battle to sign up more people. Focus on different ways that you can help people through your work, then move forward.

Have a business plan in place that is very solid, but allow for enough room to falter that one missed deadline will not throw the whole thing out the window. Have a clear understanding of what needs to be accomplished every week, and then be realistic about how much you can really get done. The business plan you have created for yourself will help to marry these two together and, hopefully, steer you towards a profitable business.

You should treat multi-level marketing as a business rather than a hobby. In order to achieve success, you need the drive and determination of a working professional.

Your network marketing efforts will succeed if you are able to emulate those independent distributors who are great leaders. This will help you emulate the effective techniques and thought processes of these people, which will lead you to greater success.

TIP! One key to success in any business is patience. Many people are discouraged after too short a time.

Promote conversation among your network contacts. The more you learn about your contacts through various social media outlets, the better equipped you are to successfully promote your products. You know their needs, wants, fears and dreams, so you can direct your market to them.

To succeed as a network marketer you need to be open-minded. Staying open-minded all the time will allow you to be in a better place to do better business.

There are a lot of people who want to teach you what they know about multi-level marketing; listen to what they have to say! A great way you can do this is by listening to podcasts. You may find something quite worthwhile to you if you just take the time to sample listen to some.

TIP! Research and apply the best methods for finding new clients. Your ultimate goal is to find new leads and customers.

Duplicate success at every opportunity. Look to your upline or leaders in the organization. Watch their success and try to have the same approach and attitude. Imitating them can help you get to the top. You should learn from other people?s successes and from your mistakes.

You have to keep learning new things if you want your MLM company to flourish. Read up on some techniques to help with multilevel marketing, as well as other topics like business, social media marketing, and anything else that might give you an edge. You can learn a lot from webinars conducted by successful network marketers who are from your company or from other organizations. The greater your arsenal of marketing knowledge and techniques, the greater your success.

Begin by putting your monthly budget in writing and commit to staying within that budget. It is important to know exactly how much money you can safely invest in your business. You have to remember that your business is not going anywhere if you do not think about investing in new things regularly.

TIP! Recognize that the first impression you make on clients may be made by the message on your phones? answering machine. You should be very clear on your answering machine message.

With all of the knowledge you just learned, your success rate should improve. Your goal, ultimately, is make as high a profit as you can. Apply this information the best you can in order to improve all aspects of your multilevel marketing.

CIA: ?Zero Dark Thirty? not a realistic portrayal of hunt for Osama bin Laden

The CIA says scenes of torture in the new film 'Zero Dark Thirty' are not an accurate portrayal of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. This follows similar criticism from three senior US Senators who say the film is 'grossly inaccurate and misleading'.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / December 22, 2012

This film image released by Columbia Pictures shows a scene from "Zero Dark Thirty," directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The film has been criticized for its scenes of torture.

In an unusual letter to CIA employees, the agency?s acting director Michael Morrell says the controversial Hollywood film ?Zero Dark Thirty? takes ?significant artistic license? with the years-long hunt that led to Navy SEALs killing terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and is ?not a realistic portrayal of the facts.?

It?s not the first official complaint about the movie.

Earlier in the week, three senior US Senators ? Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein, fellow Democrat Carl Levin and Republican John McCain ? sent a letter to Michael Lynton, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, in which they expressed their ?deep disappointment? with the film for its ?grossly inaccurate and misleading ? suggestion that torture resulted in information that led to the location of Osama bin Laden.?

?Regardless of what message the filmmakers intended to convey, the movie clearly implies that the CIA?s coercive interrogation techniques were effective in eliciting important information related to a courier for Osama bin Laden,? the senators wrote. ?We have reviewed CIA records and know that this is incorrect.?

?The fundamental problem,? they continue, ?is that people who see Zero Dark Thirty will believe that the events it portrays are facts?. Recent public opinion polls suggest that a narrow majority of Americans believe that torture can be justified as an effective form of intelligence gathering. This is false. We know that cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of prisoners is an unreliable and highly ineffective means of gathering intelligence.?

No one know this better than Senator McCain, a former Navy pilot who spent years as a POW in North Vietnam, where he was subjected to brutal torture used to elicit false confessions.

'Zero Dark Thirty': top 3 controversies surrounding the Osama bin Laden film

In his letter to CIA employees, acting director Morrell (who took over from disgraced director David Petraeus), does not say that waterboarding and other forms of what the agency calls ?enhanced interrogation? did not occur during the hunt for bin Laden.

He acknowledges that such methods, which critics say amount to torture, were part of the agency?s ?former detention and interrogation program.? (In ?Zero Dark Thirty,? these are graphically shown as water-boarding, being hung from a ceiling, beatings, sleep deprivation, and being locked in a coffin-like box.)

But Morrell takes issue with the film?s portrayal of prisoner abuse and the role it played in the Bin Laden mission.

?The film creates the strong impression that the enhanced interrogation techniques that were part of our former detention and interrogation program were the key to finding Bin Laden.?That impression is false,? Morrell writes. ?As we have said before, the truth is that multiple streams of intelligence led CIA analysts to conclude that Bin Laden was hiding in Abbottabad.?Some came from detainees subjected to enhanced techniques, but there were many other sources as well.?And, importantly, whether enhanced interrogation techniques were the only timely and effective way to obtain information from those detainees, as the film suggests, is a matter of debate that cannot and never will be definitively resolved.?

Earlier this month, the Senate Intelligence Committee voted 9-6 to approve a classified report highly critical of the CIA?s detention and interrogation program.

?I strongly believe that the creation of long-term, clandestine ?black sites? and the use of so-called ?enhanced-interrogation techniques? were terrible mistakes,? committee chairman Feinstein said regarding the report. ?The majority of the Committee agrees.?

Based on their view that this element of ?Zero Dark Thirty? is ?grossly inaccurate and misleading,? Senators Feinstein, Levin, and McCain say Sony Pictures Entertainment has ?an obligation to state that the role of torture in the hunt for Osama bin Laden is not based on the facts, but rather part of the film's fictional narrative."

Oval Office audio tapes highlight redesigned LBJ Presidential Library

12 hrs.

When the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library and Museum?reopens to the public on Saturday in Austin, Texas ? on what would have been Lady Bird Johnson?s 100th birthday ? visitors will be able to listen to more than 60 Oval Office phone calls and get reacquainted with an animatronic, life-sized version of one of the country?s most colorful presidents.

The library has undergone a year-long, $10 million renovation and now has ?a completely new look and feel,? Mark Updegrove, director of the LBJ Library and Museum, told NBC News. ?We?re using state-of-the-art technology to not only tell the story of what LBJ was doing during his presidency, but also the story of the kind of things that come across a president?s desk and what a president does day to day.?

Updegrove considers the 643 recorded hours of the 36th president?s phone conversations to be the crown jewel of the collection and said selections playing on 11 stations in the library museum allow visitors to hear the president doing everything from persuading members of Congress to pass laws to placing a very specific order for casual pants to wear after work, and seeking ? and getting - advice from his wife, Lady Bird Johnson.

Johnson???who hailed from Stonewall, Texas and served as president from November 22, 1963 until January 20, 1969???was known for using very colorful language. But the audio selections in the new exhibit are neither bleeped?out nor censored. ?There?s a perception that LBJ used worse profanity and did it more often than he actually did,? said Updegrove. ?Yes, he used scatological references and barnyard language, but he was not profane in the way some might think. He never used particularly graphic language.?

In addition to the audio recordings, other new features at the LBJ Presidential Library feature a downloadable app giving visitors the choice of five themed tours, including one in Spanish and one featuring Lady Bird Johnson chatting about various aspects of the White House, and several interactive exhibits that look at how legislation passed under LBJ???including those involving Medicare, voting rights, gun control and seat belts???have an impact on visitors? lives today. And, in keeping with Johnson?s wish that the library tell the story of his presidency ?with the bark off? and share facts that reflect ?not just the joy and triumphs, but the sorrow and failures, too,? historians and consultants such as Michael Beschloss, Robert Dallek, Robert Caro, Doris Kearns Goodwin and former Johnson Administration officials weighed in on the content of the new exhibits.?

?We?re not trying to direct history,? said Updegrove, ?We?re just laying out the facts. We think people will be surprised to learn how much this president did and how it has impacted their lives???whether they think it was right or wrong.?

Not everything in the redesigned LBJ Library is brand new. The replica of the Oval Office, which duplicates President Johnson's office in the White House at 7/8th scale, is unchanged. And the popular storytelling, animatronic LBJ is still here, but in new clothes and in a new location.?

?He used to be in ranching clothes with a Stetson,? said LBJ library spokeswoman Anne Wheeler. "But he also told those stories at dinners, so we have put him behind a podium, in a suit in an exhibit on LBJ Humor which incorporates political cartoons and caricatures from his presidential period.?

There?s one other thing that will be different after the reopening: Until now, the LBJ Library has been the only one of the 13?presidential libraries to offer free admission. Admission to the library will be free on its grand reopening date of December 22???after that, it will cost?$8 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for children 13-17.?

Mental Health Recovery

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) December 18, 2012

With the new year fast approaching, many women are trying to refresh their lives and are making resolutions for a happier, healthier 2013. For women with mental health or substance abuse issues, however, long-ignored roadblocks can impede achievement of a healthy start. Family, friend, fitness and finance goals are difficult to focus on when women are facing medical or legal troubles.

Women with mood disorders or substance abuse issues may have important legal issues that require immediate attention. Mood disorders often lead to legal repercussions; for example, women with bipolar disorder may take on excessive financial burdens, face discrimination at work or experience arrest. Women with mood disorders may also face legal issues regarding the effects of violence, divorce or substance abuse.

Brookhaven Retreat teaches women in its residential treatment facility various ways of coping with mood disorders and protecting their futures so that mental health issues do not prevent them from living full and safe lives. Only then can women focus on creating a happy new year. Once medical safety has been assured, women learn to protect their future, possessions, families and medical health with a variety of legal options. Key options Brookhaven Retreat teaches women in its program include:

Have a Lawyer: Women with mental health issues should have a lawyer who is familiar with their medical history and directions should something occur. Should women face discrimination or require hospitalization, this lawyer would serve as a contact for placing protective measures into effect.

Create Advanced Directives: Advanced directives serve to communicate preferences for mental health treatment if women are unable to give consent themselves. Because mental health issues may crop up unexpectedly, these legal documents specify the care women wish to receive and the types of treatment and medication they do not wish to be given. Advanced directives should be part of a woman?s medical record. Her doctors and health care proxy should be given copies so that, should she be admitted to a mental health facility, her specific instructions are easily accessible.

Power of Attorney: Women with mood disorders can be resistant about continuing necessary medication. Giving a trusted loved one or family member power of attorney grants them the ability to admit a woman to a psychiatric facility should she display symptoms dangerous to her well-being. This is especially important for women complying with terms of probation who may resist taking necessary precautions.

It is important that women with mental health issues consider the resources required for long-term emotional recovery. Often these resources should include legal support.

Brookhaven Retreat teaches the women in its residential treatment facility that when focusing on a path to happiness, they need to create a plan to prevent future consequences and protect the lives they are creating. Familiarity with the legal system and familiarity with a lawyer both help safeguard long-term wellness.

About Brookhaven Retreat

Brookhaven Retreat is a women?s treatment center nestled on a naturally beautiful 48-acre site secluded in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. It has helped hundreds of women across the United States overcome depression, trauma, anxiety, substance use and a range of other behavioral health challenges. Brookhaven?s Founder, Jacqueline Dawes, has predicated its gender-specific treatment on ?healing emotional breakage? for women. In this way, she has established a sanctuary and a place where women can feel safe, secure and cared for by a staff of highly trained professionals.

Getting a Gun In Japan, This has to be the Most Retarded Anti-gun Piece Yet

Japan also has a debt of literally 1 quadrillion dollars and are some of the most sexually warped people on Earth. So yeah, lets emulate them.

Hey, ask them how easy it is to become a citizen in Japan and how easy it is to become one in America?

What? You don't want to act like Japan, then? I do. It is technically easier and cheaper to get a license for a grenade launcher than it is to become a citizen if you aren't Japanese by blood.

That is why they have a low murder rate.

Sibling squabbles can lead to depression, anxiety

Dec. 20, 2012 ? Holiday presents will soon be under the tree for millions of adolescents. With those gifts may come sibling squabbles over violations of personal space, such as unwanted borrowing of a fashionable clothing item, or arguments over fairness, such as whose turn it is to play a new video game. Those squabbles represent two specific types of sibling conflict that can have different effects on a youth's emotional health, according to a multi-year study by a University of Missouri psychologist. With these findings, parents can learn how to bring peace to the home and encourage their children's healthy psychological development.

"Our results show that conflicts about violations of personal space and property are associated with greater anxiety and lower self-esteem one year later in life," said Nicole Campione-Barr, MU assistant professor of psychological science in the College of Arts and Science. "Conflicts over issues of equality and fairness are correlated to greater depression one year later."

Campione-Barr and her colleagues studied 145 pairs of mostly European-American, middle-class siblings for one year. The average ages for the pairs were 15 and 12 years. The teens rated different topics of possible conflict, noting the frequency and intensity of the arguments. The arguments were organized into two categories: violations of personal domain or conflicts over fairness and equality. The study then examined correlations among the arguments and teens' reports of depressed mood, anxiety and self-esteem after one year.

"Although parents may be inclined to step in as arbiters, previous research has found that parents' interventions into adolescent sibling conflict can be detrimental," said Campione-Barr. "In concert with those prior findings, we believe our research suggests that setting household rules such as 'knock before entering a sibling's room,' can be the best means for parents to resolve disputes and avoid appearing to play favorites. A calendar of chores and defined time limits for turns with a video game can help reduce conflicts over fairness. However, if a parent notes that one child consistently gets the short end of the stick, action should be taken to ensure one child isn't being too subordinate. Also, if most sibling interactions become intense conflicts, a family should seek professional help, especially if violence is involved."

Campione-Barr noted that one limitation to her study was that it was largely constrained in its demographic scope to white, middle-class Americans. Other cultures and economic classes may have different relationships among privacy, fairness and emotional well-being. Although adolescents in some households may not have their own rooms, they still need some degree of respect for personal space from both parents and siblings. For example, parents and siblings should respect the private nature of children's diaries.

"The next step in our research will be to examine the positive aspects of relationships among adolescent siblings and parents," said Campione-Barr. "Strong, healthy family relationships are immensely beneficial later in life. For example, there are things people will tell their siblings that they would never tell their parents, or possibly even friends. We are currently studying disclosure and levels of trust among parents, siblings and peers."

The study, "Differential associations between domains of sibling conflict and adolescent emotional adjustment," was published in the journal Child Development.

Israel to face new condemnation for settlements

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The Palestinians said Tuesday that all of the U.N. Security Council members except the United States will condemn Israel's recent announcements of new settlement construction which are making a two-state solution more difficult to achieve.

Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour said the 14 other council members will tell reporters after the council's monthly Mideast meeting on Wednesday that continuing settlement activity is illegal and must be stopped.

The United States delivered a rare blunt rebuke to Israel, its top Mideast ally, on Tuesday for its new settlement construction, but Mansour said the Obama administration won't approve a Security Council resolution or statement.

He said there is near global unanimity against Israel's actions, pointing to the 169-6 vote in the General Assembly Tuesday on a non-binding resolution condemning settlement activities by Israel and demanding their immediate cessation.

"Unfortunately, one powerful country with veto power does not want the Security Council to act accordingly," Mansour said. "Therefore, the 14 other countries in the Security Council, in their own creative way, will make their position clear, collectively or separately, to the media outside the chamber on Wednesday."

He said the four West European council members ? Germany, France, Britain and Portugal ? would issue a statement of condemnation, followed by India speaking on behalf of the Nonaligned Movement of mainly developing countries, and other council members likely including South Africa, Russia and China.

"Therefore one can say 14 versus 1 is the reality of the Security Council in condemning Israel settlement activity ? although the one is also condemning," Mansour said.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to build thousands of homes in settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem in response to the U.N. General Assembly's decision last month to upgrade the Palestinians' status to a nonmember observer state. On Monday, he said Israel will push forward with plans to build 1,500 apartments in east Jerusalem, the Palestinians' hoped-for capital.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland accused Israel of engaging in a "pattern of provocative action" that runs counter to the government's commitment to peace. She said settlement activity only puts the goal of peace "further at risk" and urged both Israel and the Palestinians to halt all provocations and take steps to revive long-stalled peace talks.

Her comments came as the United States grows increasingly frustrated with the Israelis, who continue to announce new settlement activity and take other measures to punish the Palestinians for the U.N. vote recognizing the state of Palestine, despite U.S. calls for restraint.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Tuesday called all Israeli settlements "illegal under international law."

He urged Israel to reverse its latest expansion plan in east Jerusalem, warning that if implemented "it would make a negotiated two-state solution, with Jerusalem as a shared capital, very difficult to achieve."

The European Union, Israel's biggest trading partner, has been increasingly vocal in its criticism of new settlements just as Israel is gearing up for general elections next month. In an unprecedented move, a string of European governments summoned their local Israeli ambassadors to lodge protests following the Israeli settlement announcements.

Wednesday's expected statement by key European countries on the U.N.'s most powerful body would be a symbolic, but nonetheless high-profile show of displeasure with the Israelis.

Israel's Netanyahu has been unshaken by the criticism, and on Tuesday he vowed to continue building in east Jerusalem. "Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the state of Israel, and we will continue to build there. A united Jerusalem expresses a wide national agreement," he said in the northern Israeli town of Acre.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said the idea of taking action at the United Nations only lowers the chances of renewing peace talks, and he insisted the only way to advance negotiations is "to weigh on the Palestinians and convince them to return to the negotiating table."

"Fiddling with U.N. resolutions will take us the opposite way," he added. "So it's their choice to make, a step forward or two steps backward."

Despite its vocal frustration, the United States has repeatedly blocked Security Council condemnation of Israeli settlements.

Almost exactly a year ago, the four West European nations issued a statement critical of Israeli settlements at the Security Council. They and the other 10 members pointed a finger at the United States for blocking any condemnation of Israel's accelerated settlement construction.

That scenario is likely to be repeated on Wednesday.

The United States also vetoed a U.N. resolution in February 2011 that would have condemned "illegal" Israeli settlements and urged an immediate halt to all settlement building. The 14 other Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution.

The General Assembly decision recognized a Palestinian state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. That annexation that has not been recognized internationally.

Israel rejects a return to the 1967 lines and accused the Palestinians of bypassing negotiations with the U.N. bid.

Peace talks have been frozen for four years, in large part because of the settlement issue. The Palestinians refuse to negotiate while Israel expands its settlements, which are now home to more than 500,000 Israelis.

Netanyahu has rejected calls to halt settlement construction, saying that a partial freeze he imposed in 2009 and 2010 failed to restart substantive negotiations. He says talks should resume without any preconditions.

Israeli officials have brushed off the international criticism as either unfair or by portraying it as a disagreement among friends. But officials say the increasingly frosty relations with Europe are a cause for concern.

Gun debate splits California House members

With Democrats promising to beef up federal gun laws, the renewed gun-control debate sparked by the horrific slayings in a Connecticut elementary school is beginning to play out in Congress. But a new survey of California's next congressional delegation signals the stark divide ahead: Calls for immediate and vigorous action on one side, and mostly silence on the other.

An exclusive survey of California members of the next Congress, undertaken by the Bay Area News Group and the Los Angeles News Group, found that all of the 32 House Democrats who responded support re-enacting some version of the federal assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, and many would consider more stringent new gun controls.

No California Democrat said Americans have an absolute constitutional right to a weapon such as the .223 Bushmaster rifle and 30-round magazines that Adam Lanza used to execute 26 people -- including 20 children -- on Friday in Newtown, Conn. Some referred to such firearms as "weapons of war" that have no place in private ownership.

But the newspapers' survey found the state's Republican House members all but silent. Only one of the California's 15 GOP House members specifically answered the four questions posed by the newspapers: Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Granite Bay, took a stand against increased gun control.

Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, declined to discuss gun control until after a full investigation of Lanza's rampage is done. Rep.-elect Doug

LaMalfa, R-Oroville, said "restricting the rights of those who follow the law will only empower those who choose to break the law," but wouldn't answer specific questions. All other Republicans either were said to be unavailable for comment or never returned calls and emails. Thirty-two of the state's 38 House Democrats responded to the survey.

A handful of moderate, pro-gun Democrats around the nation in recent days have signaled new willingness to consider gun control. But in a closely-divided Congress, with Republicans holding a majority in the House of Representatives, it would take supporters in both parties to tighten U.S. gun laws that are some of the loosest among developed nations.

Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, said she's "deeply disappointed" by her Republican peers' reticence.

"Everyone feels hollowed out by this, and people really want to know where we stand," she said.

Backlash from the Newtown massacre continued Tuesday. President Barack Obama said he supports re-enactment of the federal assault weapons ban. Private equity firm Cerberus, in which the California State Teachers' Retirement System is an investor, said it will sell the parent company that makes the Bushmaster rifle used in the attack. And Dick's Sporting Goods, with more than 500 stores in 44 states, said it's suspending sales of some rifles.

The newspapers' survey also found Democrats gave mixed reviews to the idea of requiring background checks, including mental-health screening, for all members of a household where guns are kept; Lanza reportedly used weapons that were owned by his mother. Many were willing to discuss the idea of requiring gun owners to take courses, get licenses and register all firearms similar to what states already require for cars.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, the California Democratic Congressional Delegation's chair, said her members want action.

"If Republicans want to change, we'll work with them," said Lofgren, D-San Jose, noting other mass shootings "didn't seem to move the dial on the other side of the aisle. I hope that something this appalling might stir my colleagues to action."

A CBS News poll in April had found 39 percent of adults nationwide believed gun control laws should be made more strict, 13 percent said they should be made less strict and 41 percent said they should be kept as they are; a new poll conducted Friday through Sunday found 57 percent now want stricter laws, 9 percent want less strict laws, and 30 percent say they should stay as they are.

Chuck Michel, attorney for the California Rifle and Pistol Association Foundation, said this isn't the right time to discuss reform. His organization -- the National Rifle Association's California affiliate -- will make its opinions known soon enough, he said, but for now won't engage in debate "out of respect and sympathy for the victims."

"Politicians pushing legislative wish lists so soon after the slayings are shameless opportunists taking advantage of an emotionally charged situation to advance a pre-existing agenda," he said.

The NRA said in a statement Tuesday that it's "shocked, saddened and heartbroken" by the Newtown slayings and is "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

The NRA wields significant influence. The Sunlight Foundation -- a nonprofit, nonpartisan government transparency watchdog -- reports the NRA spent 73 times what the leading pro-gun control advocacy organization, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, spent on lobbying in the 112th Congress, and 3,199 times what the Brady Campaign spent on the 2012 election.

The NRA has "obstructed any kind of gun safety and gun control measures," said Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland. "It's time to care more about our children, it's time to care more about our country than about a special interest group that really has been controlling the agenda."

The Democrats' agenda for now includes re-enacting an updated version of the federal assault weapons ban, to be introduced by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. Feinstein's bill would ban more than 100 specific firearms plus others with certain features, as well as magazines holding more than 10 rounds; it would grandfather in any weapons legally owned when the law is enacted. The 1994 version was written to sunset in 2004, and Republicans have consistently opposed all efforts to renew it.

But McClintock said "such laws tend to create a society in which criminals are as well-armed as ever and law-abiding citizens are rendered increasingly defenseless." Citizens have a constitutional right to defend themselves with firearms, he said, and the Bushmaster rifle might look like a military assault weapon "but functions with the same firing mechanism as many handguns, sports and target rifles."

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, the survivor of a shooting herself, said California's gun controls are among the nation's strictest and should be a model for federal law -- or perhaps exceeded.

"We're way ahead of the curve,'' she said, "but it still is not enough.''

Getco to buy Knight Capital for $1.4 billion

(Reuters) - Knight Capital Group Inc , which suffered a near-fatal trading error in August, said it will be acquired by electronic trading firm Getco Holdings Co in a deal valued at $1.4 billion in cash and stock.

The deal seals a whirlwind five months for Knight, which executes about 10 percent of U.S. equity trading volume.

The company was rescued by a group of investors led by Jefferies Group Inc and including Chicago-based Getco who injected $400 million after errant software sent millions of unintentional orders in the opening 45 minutes of the U.S. trading day on August 1.

Knight and Getco will combine to form a new publicly traded company. Knight shareholders other than Getco will have the right to elect either $3.75 per share in cash or one share of common stock in the new business.

The offer represents a 13 percent premium to Knight's closing stock price of $3.33 on Tuesday. It is also a 51 percent premium to Knight's closing price on November 23 when reports surfaced that the company was looking for buyers.

"The transaction provides near-term certainty in the form of cash," Knight Chief Executive Thomas Joyce said in a statement.

Sources told Reuters on Tuesday that Getco was poised to buy Knight after sweetening its offer to beat out rival Virtu Financial LLC.

No. 1 Notre Dame has underdog in its DNA

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? The rankings say Notre Dame is No. 1 going into the BCS championship against Alabama. Plenty of folks aren't buying it, starting with the oddsmakers who currently have the Crimson Tide as about a touchdown favorite for the Jan. 7 meeting in Miami between two of college football's proudest programs.

The Fighting Irish aren't sweating the point spread. In fact, it's pretty much business as usual for Notre Dame, which has a chance to become the first team since 1984 to start the season unranked and end it as national champions.

"Everybody thought everybody was better than us," defensive tackle Louis Nix III said Monday. "Oklahoma was better than us. USC was better than us.

"We get it. We know how everyone thinks. We're just Notre Dame. Overrated Notre Dame. No one gives us credit for anything. Just the luck of the Irish, I guess."

History suggests that being the underdog in the BCS title game hasn't been a bad thing. Of the 14 BCS championship games played since the system was implemented in 1998, seven have been won by the underdog.

Alabama was a slight underdog last year after losing to LSU in the regular season, and then shut out the Tigers with the national title on the line.

In the 2005 championship game between Texas and Southern California, Vince Young and the Longhorns felt as if they were being talked about as nothing more than a speed bump on the road to USC's coronation as one of the greatest teams in college football history. Plus, Young was still seething over coming in second to USC's Reggie Bush in the Heisman Trophy voting.

The result: Texas 41, USC 38, and a performance for the ages by Young.

The following season, Ohio State reached the national championship game with a perfect record, No. 1 ranking and a Heisman Trophy winner in quarterback Troy Smith. Florida was the Buckeyes opponent and the question was: Did the Gators even belong in game?

Urban Meyer, the Gators' coach, made sure his players got that message. Even if it meant stretching the truth a bit. After a month of being told that nobody thought they had a chance to beat Ohio State, the Gators routed the Buckeyes 41-14 to start the Southeastern Conference's run of six straight BCS championships.

It's impossible to quantify what, if any, effect being the underdog has actually had on any of those "upsets." Any team that gets to a championship game must be good in the first place.

Whether Notre Dame can or will use the slights ? real or perceived ? as motivation remains to be seen.

"I've used the technique before during my time as a head coach," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said about playing the underdog card. "I don't know that that is pertinent because it's a one-game deal. It's all or nothing.

"Both teams have different dynamics to deal with because of the long layoff. Preparation is more important than any kind of fire and brimstone speech that I can bring to them."

Offensive coordinator Chuck Martin said the coaches don't even need to bring it up. The Fighting Irish have played all season like a team with something to prove.

"I think it's a little bit part of our kids' DNA now," he said. "We don't have to use it as much as maybe early in the year when we went on the road to Michigan State and they were ranked eighth and nobody was thinking we were very good. I think we've kind of just built it into who we are. Everybody likes telling us what we're not good at ? which is fine by us. One of our strengths is knowing what we're not very good at. We try to play to our strengths and play away from our weaknesses."

It's a style that has led to more than a few close calls on the way to Miami.

Notre Dame beat Purdue and BYU by three points each. The Irish needed three overtimes to beat Pittsburgh by a field goal and went to overtime against Stanford, too. In both the Pitt and Stanford games, Notre Dame caught a few breaks. A missed field goal here, a questionable call by the officials there.

Meanwhile, except for its upset loss to Texas A&M, Alabama has rarely been challenged on its way to a third BCS title game appearance in the past four seasons.

The Tide is outscoring its opponents by an average of 28 points per game. Notre Dame's average margin of victory is 16 points per game, as the Irish have leaned on Heisman Trophy finalists Manti Te'o and a stellar defense while they developed first-year starting quarterback Everett Golson.

"I understand why people say Alabama's going to win," said Nix, the 325-pound anchor of Notre Dame's defensive front. "Great offensive line. Good quarterback. Great guys on the edge. They've been in the national championship twice in the last three years. I would probably pick Alabama, too.

"At the end of the day it's all about what's on the scoreboard."

Boehner opens door to tax hikes, shifts 'cliff' talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner's offer to accept a tax rate increase for the wealthiest Americans knocks down a key Republican road block to a deal resolving the year-end "fiscal cliff."

The question now boils down to what President Barack Obama offers in return. Such major questions, still unanswered so close to the end of the year suggest, however, that no spending and tax agreement is imminent.

A source familiar with the Obama-Boehner talks confirmed that Boehner proposed extending low tax rates for everyone who has less than $1 million in net annual income, meaning tax rates would rise on all above that line.

Under current law, the 35 percent top tax rate is scheduled to expire on January 1, and would automatically go to 39.6 percent. Boehner's proposal would allow that rate to rise as scheduled at a threshold of $1 million - putting it back to where it was during the Clinton administration.

The White House has not accepted the proposal and the source could not confirm any additional talks were held on Sunday between Obama and Boehner.

With just over two weeks before the fiscal cliff's $600 billion in automatic tax hikes and spending cuts are triggered, threatening a new recession, there is little time to craft a comprehensive deal that will satisfy both Democrats and Republicans.

Until the latest Republican offer, made on Friday, Boehner had insisted on extending all of the Bush era's lower tax rates, resisting Obama's demand to let the marginal rates rise on income above $250,000. A rising chorus of business executives also had urged Republicans to agree to this.

Some lawmakers and congressional aides had predicted that Republicans, once serious negotiations began, might try to raise the $250,000 threshold, say to $500,000 or $1 million. They also speculated that Republicans, if forced into a tax rate hike on the upper-income groups, might seek a smaller increase, say to around 37 percent.

Although the White House has not accepted Boehner's gambit, it could push negotiations away from entrenched, ideological positions.

"Boehner has now accepted the premise of higher rates. So now we're just arguing over details. I think it's a significant step," said Greg Valliere, chief political strategist at Potomac Research Group.

A framework deal spelling out tax revenue and spending cut targets to be finalized in the new year could be possible, Valliere said.

"Boehner's offer to allow tax rates to go up for taxpayers earning over $1 million fundamentally transforms fiscal cliff negotiations," added Sean West, U.S. policy analyst at Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy.

In a note to clients, West wrote that it signals, significantly, that Boehner ultimately believes a deal to avoid the cliff is still possible.

"The political burden is now shifted back to the president, who must be willing to take on his party in order to get a deal Boehner can ultimately pass. We do not think the president will overreach: Obama will work with Boehner to get to a deal."

There are still several critical elements to a deal besides a tax rate increase on the wealthy, including Republican demands to cut spending on social programs.

Changes to the expensive Medicare and Medicaid health care programs for the elderly and the poor could be central to any deal, which must also include an increase in the federal debt limit needed by the end of February.

DEMANDS SOCIAL PROGRAM CUTS

Boehner conditioned his tax rate increase offer on Obama's agreement to cuts in social program spending, often called entitlements.

Many Republican lawmakers want to raise the eligibility age for Medicare to 67 from 65. They also want to link Medicare to the income of recipients, making wealthier retirees pay more for their care.

Currently, Medicare does have some means testing, charging higher premiums for coverage of doctors visits and prescription drugs to individuals earning more than $85,000 and married couples earning more than $170,000. Only about 5 percent of recipients pay these higher premiums.

Thus far, Obama has offered only about $400 billion in 10-year entitlement savings, mostly through small adjustments in reining in health care costs - not fundamental changes such as raising the eligibility age.

And just as Boehner faces opposition in his own party to raising any tax rates, Obama faces opposition to cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security from Democrats, who pledged in election campaigns they would protect these programs.

A major bloc of congressional Democrats has already signaled they will not accept major cutbacks in Medicare as part of any fiscal cliff deal.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California and Maryland Representative Chris Van Hollen of Maryland are among the high ranking Democrats in the House who have come out forcefully in recent days against raising the age for eligibility for Medicare to 67 years of age.

"Given the level of savings that is being talked about from Medicare, you can't get it all from providers and drug makers," said Paul Heldman, an analyst at Potomac Research, which tracks Washington policy for investors.

"So opponents of raising the eligibility age have reason to believe beneficiaries will take some sort of hit if a mega-deal is cut," he said.

If Republicans are not successful in securing entitlement program cuts in exchange for a tax-rate increase on the wealthy, they are adamant about using a debt-limit increase as leverage to overhaul Social Security and Medicare.

The U.S. Treasury expects to reach its $16.4 trillion statutory debt cap by year-end, and will exhaust its remaining borrowing capacity around mid-February, risking a potential default.

Louisiana Republican Representative John Fleming, a member of the conservative Tea Party caucus who has never voted to increase the debt ceiling, said he would support a debt limit hike if it were part of a deal to make Medicare and Social Security sustainable.

The pace of activity could pick up the coming week.

House Republicans were told to prepare for a possible weekend session next week, potentially interrupting travel plans for the long Christmas holiday weekend.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor scheduled "possible legislation related to expiring provisions of law," a reference to the expiring tax cuts, for the end of the week, portending a weekend session. Cantor has said the House would meet through the Christmas holidays and beyond.

(This story was fixed to correct current top tax rate to 35 percent from 36 percent)
