Tiempo Libre had the Ludington Area Center for the Arts performance hall rocking ? or more accurately, cha-cha-cha-ing, snake dancing and, in general, having a good time Saturday night.

The West Shore Performing Arts series concert heated up the hall as the Grammy-nominated group performed two sets, and invited people to dance anywhere there was room.

At times, the classicly-trained musicians challenged the crowd to dance, mixing in Bach with more contemporary sounds.

And dance, some of the crowd ? an increasing number as the night progressed ? did.

Two women in particular joined the band for many songs. Laura Pomeroy and Martha Hubbell actually had a bit of dance contest during one song. Pomeroy learned to dance from her mother and grandmother, both Latin dancers. Hubbell was among the first to get up and dance and spent much of the evening on stage, at times urging others to join her, as did the band, saying time and again that it was a Cuban party, so dance.

Julian Coker, 5-1/2, didn?t dance, but the Ruby Creek resident wandered about the stage, especially intrigued by the drummer. Coker had attended the afternoon workshop the band put on and his mother said he was much intrigued, so they returned in the evening and keyboardist and musical director Jorge Gomez at times took Coker around trying to get him to crash the cymbals to end one song.

The night ended with a bang ? or actually a snake dance as many in the audience joined in, in a scene a bit reminiscent of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band WSCC brought to the Ramsdell Theatre a couple years ago ? only with a decided Cuban flavor.

COMING UP AT WSCC

This week, the 95-member Wind Symphony and 40-member Chamber Winds, under the direction of Ted Malt, will perform a holiday repertoire on Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow the concert where Santa Claus will greet children both young and old.

On Thursday at 7:30 p.m., the Jazz Band, also led by Malt, will take the stage. Making its debut with the Jazz Band is the new Percussion Ensemble, which is a pilot program developed to bring the percussive arts to music students. Made up of both college and local high school students, the performance will feature an illumined show, ?Junkyard in the Dark,? with special guest Kevin Dupree.

WSSC Director of Cultural Arts Rick Plummer said, with Malt directing, these shows would not be your father?s or grandfather?s concerts.
